INTRO


You may not expect much from Nazare restaurants, but the incredible food scene is rich in fresh seafood, local ingredients, sweet desserts, and a never-ending abundance of sangria, beers, and wines to wash it all down with.

The town offers more than 150 eateries and serves up everything from famous Portuguese cuisine to Indian, Italian, Sushi, and more.

And with no shortage of cheap and cheerful eateries, family-friendly restaurants, and fine-dining options to choose from, every person’s palate can be satisfied in this one glorious seaside village. 

A Tasquinha regularly boasts long line-ups, while beloved Gelotamania, is an ice cream hot spot regardless of the time of year.

Head to O Sitio for fan favorites like Sitiado or Casa Pires, an institution for residents.

Or, for a luxurious meal, look no further than Pangeia in the neighborhood of Pederneira. 

Looking for something quick and light? 

Check out the food stalls at the beach’s south end or head to the Praia do Norte food truck lane.

Quenching your thirst has also never been easier in Nazare. 

Cafes galore and local cervejarias like Berlim, Cervajaeria Gale, and Taberna Do Inacio, are ideal venues for grabbing an imperial, a local draft beer served in a small glass for optimal freshness.

Don’t leave without a visit to Mercado Municipal da Nazare, the town’s historic farmer’s market featuring fish, meats and cheeses, local organic produce, flowers, unique desserts, and even cookware.

This cozy top spot is bursting with both character and flavor.

Vinyl records hang from the walls alongside guitars and other typical Nazare nicknacks, creating a unique dining experience not replicated by any restaurant in the area.  

The menu, a modern take on Portuguese petiscos, is paired with an equally impressive wine list featuring boutique vineyards from around the region.

Then perhaps it’s time to venture off the Portuguese cuisine path.

Hailing from India, via Scotland, the owners decided to set up shop after a personal holiday in Nazare. And the rest they say, is history.

This cheap and cheerful pizzeria is anything but delicious.

A crispy edge on a sizeable floppy triangle, similar to a New York slice, but with less cheese.

Quick and easy for those vacation nights when cooking or going out is just not in the cards.

A recent addition to the Sitio and just around the corner from the funicular is Adega Marruca.

Chalkboards announce the daily menu and feature continental meat and fish dishes.

EAT

The Octopus salad. This fresh-tasting salad is seasoned with cilantro, olive oil, and onions, and is a popular choice as an appetizer.

Nazare’s local institution with young, old, and visitors alike is easy to miss.

There is no sign — no logo or name on the windows.

And no sandwich board outside on the sidewalk announcing the restaurant’s presence at all.

All you will find is a stark white building with a blue trim awning and a side entrance that leads you to a most delicious meal.

Located at the south end of the Nazare Beach promenade, Tavern 8 to 80 started out as a tapas bar but now offers a full menu.

Desserts are created in single-serve snack sizes and prepared at the table by your server.

As the logo suggestions, Taberna D’Adelia has been serving up exceptional dishes to its guests since 1987.

A multi-award-winning restaurant, the menu is deeply rooted in regional flavors and specialties like the town’s historic dried fish.

One of Tripadvisor’s top-rated restaurants and a must eat at with visitors to Nazare, A Tasquinha requires reservations and is often found fully booked during the peak travel season.

Long lines have not been a deterrent for those diners looking for a family-friendly establishment with over 50 years of experience.

EAT

The Cataplana, a seafood dish originating from Portugal’s Algarve region, is cooked in a traditional copper pot and meant to feed two hungry mouths.

Willing to drive for a great meal?

Then pack the car and head 15 minutes outside of town towards Alcobaca to O Cabeco.

More than just a restaurant, O Cabeco is an immersive venue located in nature where the outdoor surroundings not only influence the flavors but the overall dining experience as well.

Roaming horses, goats, and ponies on the estate only adds to the overall charm of this unique locale.

Italian Kitchen Bonta Bistro is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening away from the crowds.

Off the main tourist drag and on a quiet residential street with ample parking, Bonta specializes in fresh Italian pasta dishes and serves only Italian wines. A true rarity for the region.

The Portuguese have perfected the meal of ‘lanchar’ – to snack, or the small meal you eat in between your lunch and dinner.

Sitting in a privileged location just underneath the promontory, Taberna Ti Ezelino is a hot spot for sunsets and seafood petiscos.

It may seem odd, but Nazare has a growing food truck and street food scene. 

From desserts and donuts to kebabs, each year brings new treats offered in mainly beachfront locales.

Local hot spot Street Burger of Nazare is a fan favorite for pro suffers and offers vegetarian options.

‘Grandma’s home cooking on your table every day’ – reads the tagline for Esmeralda’s Facebook home page.

And there’s genuinely no better description for this remarkable Nazare takeaway spot.

The menu is set weekly and features daily specials that make it easy to plan ahead for your delicious Portuguese dinner at ‘home’.

Started by two brothers in 2011, Esmeralda is where locals go for when they want fast food, Portuguese style.

One of the areas rare luxury dining experiences, Pangeia, is less traditional and more innovative with international delicacies from around the world.

High above Nazare in the neighborhood of Pederneira, Pangeia has an unprecedented view of the beach below and the food to match.

This all-female kitchen, the only one of its kind in Nazare, is a place worth looking for.

A traditional menu dedicated to fresh fish, guests come here for the quality, and for the company of the vibrant owner who will not hesitate to sing Fado during the middle of service.

When it comes to cervejarias, it doesn’t get any more local than Oficina Do Inacio.

This tavern serves up some of the most traditional snacks and dishes that Nazare and Portugal have to offer.

This restaurant’s specialty is shellfish. So much so that it doesn’t offer any desserts.

Located in the Sitio neighborhood and just steps from the Praca dos Touros, O Luis is a constant delight for locals and visitors.
